Remote work has been a new and challenging experience for me. Initially, it was difficult to engage with my studies. Everything was and continues to be different—online classes, online presentations, online conferences, and a remote internship. Yet, with less than normal contact with my professors, in addition to a new grading system – this did not make it hard to stay motivated. Amid this new remote life, I made it a very rewarding experience. I was determined to make connections, learn new skills, and thrive in a remote environment. How did I do this? With Duke University’s support, I followed some tips I think are very helpful.
My most important rule is to Keep Busy! I designated space in my apartment with good lighting, and minimal distractions, and made it my office. Since the first day of my internship, I was proactive by asking my supervisor to schedule regular check-ins. This gave me a chance to ask questions or give feedback about how my work is going. We scheduled a weekly meeting, even if for just 20 minutes.
It is crucial to talk frankly about the challenges of remote work (or studies), therefore I asked my supervisor for her guidance on interning remotely and to assess my performance. These tips are:
1. Separate your work, leisure, and sleep spaces
2. Schedule your day
3: Do more of what makes you feel accomplished
These simple tips made my remote work an enriching experience. I am still an intern at WomenNC and I am very motivated on documenting a Leadership and Training Program for women in North Carolina. Writing a project and presenting it strengthens my own leadership skills and harnesses my network. Studying or/and working during COVID-19 is challenging, but I see it as personal growth. I can do it; you can do it!
